MAKING SURE WE GET IT RIGHT

Total Body Color Studio professional hair color specialists are trained and experienced in the art and science of hair coloring. Whether it is your first time getting a color or you know exactly what you want, we take the time to determine your hair texture and make sure we’re both “speaking the same language.” The last thing you or your hair color specialist wants is to end up with the wrong color for you. Here’s a few industry definitions that will help us understand what you’re looking for:

BASE COLOR

This is the main hair color you have or want to end up with after coloring. This color is applied first, before doing anything to give your hair color dimension (see below). Or, this is the color applied to the hair roots during a root touch-up.

KEY COLORING TERMS

Tone refers to the specific base color you want and further defines the shades of blonde, brunette, and red coloring – for example, platinum blonde. Tone is described in terms of “cool” and “warm.” Tone is further refined into “dimension” and “contrast.”

  • Cool tones tend toward blue, violet, or green
  • Warm tones tend toward yellow, orange, or red
  • Dimension refers to the ranges of tones – for example hair that is all the same color is referred to as flat, meaning it just has one dimension
    • Your Total Body professional hair color specialist can help add dimension to your hair using highlights or lowlights using foils, a cap, or painting (known as “balayage”) to achieve the desired result
      • Highlights add dimension by coloring specific strands of hair lighter than the base color
      • Lowlights add dimension going the other way – coloring specific strands darker than the base color
  • Contrast refers to the level of dimension that is added
    • High-contrast, as the name suggests, creates a distinct difference from the base color of your hair
    • Low-contrast, on the other hand, is less noticeable and provides a more natural look to your hair – much like how the lighting in a room creates subtle differences in your hair color
