When you’ve tried every pencil, powder, pigment, gel, and stencil at the makeup counter and your brows are still sparse, there’s microblading, a more permanent fix for thin brows that promises to change your brow life. Microblading has grown steadily in popularity over the past couple of years and now everyone’s mother knows about the once under-the-radar service. And with good reason: Nothing out there is as long-lasting nor natural-looking.
WHAT IS IT?
Microblading is a tattooing technique in which a small handheld tool made up of several tiny needles is used to add permanent pigment to the skin. Microblading differs from standard eyebrow tattooing because each hairstroke is created by hand producing a thin, natural looking line that blends in with existing eyebrow hair, whereas, with eyebrow tattoos it is still done with a machine and needle often producing thicker, less natural lines that tend to expand over time. It is typically used on eyebrows to attempt to either create, enhance or reshape the appearance of the eyebrows. Microblading deposits pigment into upper region of the dermis, so it fades more rapidly than traditional tattooing techniques, which deposit pigment deeper into the dermis.
DOES IT HURT?
Pain is relative. Some feel more than others. Overall it feels like little scratches. You feel it, but it’s not unbearable. Patients’ brows can be pretreated with topical numbing cream and topped up throughout the process to dull the discomfort. If you have a low pain tolerance, it’s best if you apply numbing cream for up to an hour beforehand.
This technique is a process that may be used to improve or create eyebrow definition, to cover gaps of lost hair, to extend the eyebrows, or may be used as a full reconstruction if the brows have little/no hair. Each microblading stroke is applied individually, allowing our technician to control the shape, color and density of the completed eyebrows.
We begin each appointment by discussing your desired look and needs before measuring and sketching out the placement of the eyebrows. Measuring brow placement is a multi-step process that begins by determining the center of the face and the set of the your eyes. From there our technician sketches out the full brow with the appropriate thickness and arch height to give the you a good idea of what the finished brows will look like and set the outline for the microblading.
HOW LONG DOES IT LAST?
Microblading is a type of tattooing technique. Pigment is deposited into the dermis so as to make the pigment last. The tattoo, as all other tattoos, can fade depending on multiple factors (quality of pigment/ink used, UV exposure, elements found in skincare products, medications, etc.) but will never disappear completely. Tattooing is permanent, whether it is on the body or face. It is crucial to do your research on the experience and education level of the artist before having any work done.
Immediately post treatment, eyebrows will appear darker than expected, but will fade during the healing process over the following 4 weeks.
ARE SEVERAL APPOINTMENTS NEEDED?
Microblading typically takes two appointments to complete. In the first appointment, the client is profiled and the eyebrows are drawn on with a waterproof pencil, so our technician and you can agree on the look. Our technician then microblades the eyebrows and the you are ready to go back into the world. There is some mild scabbing and aftercare required, but your microblading should be completely healed in 30 days.
The second appointment is a touch up at least 30 days after the first session. This allows enough time for the ink in the epidermis to naturally slough off, and the color to settle into your skin. In the touch up appointment, our technician can see how your skin has received the ink and make any necessary corrections.
